As this article makes its way around search engines across the country, one might ask, “Why do media companies publicize information that is inaccurate?” I asked myself the same question as one erroneous report after another surfaced about the late songstress, Whitney Houston. In fact, the past two weeks have been filled with poorly researched stories about Whitney Houston’s death and the activities of the people close to her. I remember in the 70’s when Carol Burnett sued the National Enquirer for $300,000 in compensatory damages and $1.3 million in punitive damages over a March 2^nd article which alleged she became boisterous at a Washington D.C. restaurant. The California Court of Appeals later reduced Burnett’s award to $50,000 in compensatory damages and $750,000 in punitive damages.

Now, fast-forward to Saturday, February 11, 2012. Are there any similarities? There were alleged reports of illegal drug use and reports that the Rapper Ray Jay found Whitney Houston’s body. There were reports that Houston and Ray Jay spent the weekend together. As it turns out the body guard, whose first name is Ray, found Houston’s body. There were reports that Bobby Brown caused a disturbance at Houston’s funeral and finally a report that Bobbi Kristina went missing for some unsubstantiated amount of time after the funeral. These may seem like minor details to some, but they are the types of false statements that wake seasoned journalists in the middle night.

So I ask, “Why report information that has been poorly researched?” And you may ask me, “What does all this have to do with SEO?” Well, SEO rank can be impacted by any number of factors: who you are, the type of content relevant to you, the number of fans on your Facebook page, who you follow on Twitter, what groups you subscribe to on LinkedIn and even by what is happening in the news. In media’s quest to be #1 on Twitter and #1 on all the search engines, they seem to have forgotten the very reason why we exist as an industry in the first place.

When Houston’s death first made the news, the story broke on Twitter at 4:30 p.m. Saturday evening. The post read, “My sources say Whitney Houston found dead in Beverly Hills hotel…Not in the news yet!!” according to Samantha Murphy, a tech reporter for Mashable. The second recorded post however read, “omgg, my aunt tiffany who work for whitney houston just found whitney houston dead in the tub . such ashame & sad L” Finally, this post which came from The Associated Press, “BREAKING: Publicist Kristen Foster says singer Whitney Houston has died at age 48,” posted on Twitter some 27 minutes later. Yes, The Associated Press took more time to confirm its story. They may not have been first to break the story, but they were accurate.

Media companies have built a business on being credible and accurate, because accuracy, not being first, builds loyal readership. Loyal readers don't use organic searches to engage with familiar publishers’ web sites. They don't start their day searching for content; instead they check their e-mail or twitter hashtags for the latest information. So, if your content is inaccurate, the likelihood of you building a loyal reader base is slim. It is the readers' trust in established media brands that draw them back to your web site time and time again. And, because repeat visitors generate the majority of web sites page views they, by default, generate most of the revenue. It is fairly intuitive then that creating compelling quality content encourages repeat visits resulting in more page views and revenue.

So, the death of Whitney Houston begs this journalistic question, “Has speed of reporting somehow surpassed accuracy in importance?” Let’s hope not! As a 25 year veteran in the media industry, I have been disturbed by some of the mainstream reporting over the past few weeks. Surely, Whitney Houston and her family deserve the same journalistic integrity that Carol Burnett received in the 70’s. SEO Ranking: Is It Now A Meaningless Metric?

Just when most companies got their SEO strategies all figured out along came social media and changed the game completely. Over the past few years companies have been able to achieve high SEO rankings simply by figuring out the right balance of keyword density and inbound links to their web sites. Everyone readily accepted the fact that search engine rankings changed frequently based on the particular search engine you were using and that results varied based on what was happening in the news at the time of your search. The fact that search results differed based on where you were searching from actually helped some smaller companies complete with local firms at the local level.

But now all that has changed. Search engine results, thanks to social media, now can depend on who you are, the type of content that is relevant to you, the number of fans on your company’s Facebook page, who you follow on Twitter or even what groups you subscribe to on LinkedIn. So, it appears that navigating the SEO maze in the future will be more difficult than ever.

Mike Volpe, Vice President of Marketing for Hub Spot divides the evolution of SEO into three distinct eras. First was the before 2000 era, where SEO was a function of the type of content and the number of keywords contained on your web site. Next, there was SEO from 2000 to 2010, which used website content and search engine authority to rank search results. Web site authority is basically the number of inbound links connected to a specific web page on your site. The number of inbound links and the quality of the web sites that link to your web page indicate to search engines the quality and value of your content. Links, to Google, are like a recommendation or votes of confidence about your site and its content. And finally SEO from 2010 and beyond, where SEO rank is determined by content, authority and what Mike Volpe referred to as the Social Graphic, which is the collection of a web user’s personal information, gathered from across any number of social media platforms.

If you feel a little frustrated, just keep watching the SEO horizon and keep this in mind. In the words of Meg Pickard, head of digital engagement at the Guardian in the United Kingdom, “Anybody who goes into social media, or any new and emergent technology, and says, ‘I know exactly how we should use this’ is probably lying.” “The whole point of emergent technology or things changing is the uses haven’t necessarily been established yet.”

The smart marketers will stay the course, sticking with the basics-using solid SEO structure, posting regularly to their blog and producing content that of both relevant and accessible to potential web site users. According to a study by Marketing Profs and the Content Marketing Institute, 41% of B2B marketers say that producing the kind of content that engages prospects and customers is their biggest content marketing challenge. So, focus on the things that really matter. Is my SEO program generating qualified traffic to my site? Are my SEO efforts generating phone calls? Are my SEO efforts delivering a solid ROI?

This may seem like a simple thing, but every web site should contain some type of call to action. If your web site doesn’t have a clear and concise call to action, what is the point of having a web site? In order to deliver ROI your site must ask the customer to do something-download a document, give you their name or e-mail address. So, always include a strong call to action. SEO ranking doesn’t and never did guarantee traffic to your web site nor does it generate leads and sales. You generate traffic and sales leads by delivering quality content that meets the needs of the customers who you want to attract. Yes, the marketing process has changed and consumers now control 60 to 80 percent of all communication inside the buying funnel; so, figuring out what important and what’s just background noise is critical to you marketing success. Making SEO work for your business

Many SEO customers focus on receiving keyword reports as part of their managed SEO campaign. However, when your keyword performance is less than expected the question becomes how can you improve your SEO results? Remember SEO by nature is a customer acquisition tool. And, today more than ever a solid SEO strategy is key to your business success. With media companies specifically, SEO can help transition traditional print customers across the digital divide toward one of many digi-mobile delivery channels. Research shows that traditional print readers also consume news online. Therefore, during the early stages of a new online user's digital experience, organic search is their primary method of finding the content they want and need. Therein lies the power of SEO. New digi-mobile users turn to organic search to direct them toward publishers' content. And, it is the end users' first few experiences with your web site content that can determine whether they will become repeat visitors or seek out some other content provider.

The fact that SEO helps people find content makes it one of the more power marketing tools available for reaching new audiences and attracting new advertisers. Research shows that consumers/advertisers control up to 80% of online engagement; therefore, figuring out the best key words to use in your marketing efforts is critical to your online success.

There have been many articles written about SEO. One of the best was written by Sean Odom who runs a Houston, Texas based SEO consulting firm that specializes in search engine marketing and Social Media Optimization. According to Odom, a proper keyword analysis is the first step in a solid search engine campaign. He goes on to explain the primary factors to consider when conducting a keyword analysis-keyword, phraseology, popularity, targetedness, and keyword competitiveness.

Keyword phraseology refers to knowing exactly what form of a particular keyword or phrase people are typing into a search engine. Are people searching the keyword in its singular or plural form? Are they searching by key phrases or by single words? How well you identify the different variations of keywords and phrases used during organic searches will determine how well your SEO strategy performs.

Keyword popularity refers to how often a keyword or phrase is searched, while keyword targetedness is the frequency of keyword searches by a particular audience. Although these two are very similar, targetedness can be directly linked to a keywords ability to trigger responses from a specific user group. Although the number of times a keyword is searched is very important, understanding a keyword's potential for bringing in new customers and sales is paramount. I prefer to use click through rates to measure keyword targetedness. Click through rates rather than the number of searches measures user engagement with a specific keyword. And, it is user engagement and not organic searches that drive sales.

Finally, keyword competitiveness is the number competitors that show up in organic search results for a specific keyword or phrase. Google AdWords Traffic Estimator ranks keyword competitiveness as high, medium and low. These measurements can be misleading. For example, several hundred to several thousand listings under a specific keyword or phrase is considered to be low in competitiveness in Google. Local businesses however need to use a more straight-forward method for measuring keyword competitiveness. You can determine local keyword competitiveness by simply counting the number of your direct competitors that show up in the top 10 or 20 search results for the keywords you want to use. If there are more than 10 of your direct competitors listed in the top twenty search results, the keyword or phrase is competitive. Additionally, if your direct competitors are paying for sponsored listings, the keyword or key phrase is highly competitive.

In conclusion, SEO can be a lot of work, however there are huge benefits to learning how to use this tool effectively. Keyword reports are great tools for measuring results. However, understanding how these four elements of SEO work together will help you get the results you really want. For Newspapers SEO is more about Audience Development than Revenue

The "Information Age" has brought about more than its share of challenges for newspapers. The last five years have been some of the most transformational years in media history. Yet, today's business environment provides new opportunities for newspaper/media companies to prove their relevance in the local market by improving local news reporting, creating new business models, and providing new products and services that meet the ever changing informational needs of today's consumers.

So, how does Search Engine Optimization (SEO) fit into this process? Does SEO really help print media companies transform from the traditional world of ink on paper to the fast-moving world of mobile? Research shows that traditional print readers will and do read the newspaper online. In fact, as John Paton, CEO of the Journal Register Company, says, "It is the readers' trust in established newspaper brands that is drawing long-time print customers online."

Matt Shanahan, in response to Richard Tofel's post, "SEO is for Suckers", brought to light these basic marketing paradigms. First, loyal readers don't use organic searches to engage with familiar publishers’ web sites. He added, "Heavy media consumers don't start their day searching for content, instead they check their e-mail or twitter hashtags for the latest information." So, this idea that SEO somehow helps to encourage repeat web traffic and thus grow sustainable digital revenue is a little misguided. In fact, the marketing equity of SEO among repeat visitors decreases over time-as readers become more familiar with publishers’ web sites and organic searches decrease.

And, because repeat online visitors generate the majority of web sites page views they, by default, generate most of the revenue. Therefore, it is fairly intuitive to conclude that creating compelling quality content which encourages repeat visits, more so than SEO, is most effective in driving page views and revenue.

Additionally, Shanahan noted that publisher notifications are effective in driving consumer engagement. Because heavy media users tend to respond to publishers' online news prompts, focusing on ways to allow the reader to customize his or her own user experience via technology is one key to increasing web traffic and frequency.

So, where does Search Engine Optimization (SEO) fit in the news media marketing mix? I believe it should be top of mind for marketers. Because SEO makes use of organic online searches, it is one of the best tools for reaching new audiences and it is ideal for attracting new advertisers. Research has found that consumers/advertisers, and not marketers, control up to 80% of online engagement. Therefore, SEO is critical to media companies' ability to grow audience and attract new advertising revenue.

SEO then, is not truly "for suckers", as Richard Tofel so inaptly put it. But rather it is one of many useful tools uniquely designed to attract new business. Producing quality content however is paramount. Focusing on improving local news reporting, making effective use of news gathering and distribution resources and creating cost effective business models, in my view, are the key to building a strong and sustainable competitive advantage centered on news media’s long standing core competencies.

Is SEO Dead?

When it comes to SEO let's answer the most obvious question. Is SEO dead? This question is beginning to surface frequently among those working in digital circles. And, I would tend to answer, "No." However, search engine optimization is more than just selecting the right four of five words, structuring your web pages using those keywords in your title pages and then crafting your web content using those key words so that online web crawlers can rank your content high on a list of organic search results. SEO is more than that. What many people commonly overlook is that you don't write content for search engines, you write content for people. Therefore, in order to have great SEO results you need to have compelling and relevant content. You need to position that content where people can find it, want to read and link to it. It is those incoming links that are, in my view, the secret sauce to solid SEO performance. And, that is where I tend to hang my hat with respect to SEO.

Buy Local Targeted Advertising That Will Deliver Local Sales

A little over 30 days ago Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL announced plans to form a new partnership to offer potential advertisers the chance to buy ad space in each of the three sites using only one exchange. The deal is set to launch early in 2012. And, as Ross Levinsohn, executive vice president in charge of the American region at Yahoo, explained, “…we believe (this arrangement) will be a more efficient, effective and more effortless way to access true premium inventory and formats. It seemed like a great plan, at first. The goal being to make it easier for would-be digital advertisers to purchase ad space on Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL web sites.

But, wait a minute the new service won’t include all of the companies’ ad space. This usually means that buyers will only be allowed to purchase remnant impressions from these content providers. Don’t get me wrong remnant ads work very well for branding efforts. But, the real problem is Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL like most online companies have too much inventory to sell, and they want to keep from selling that inventory dirt cheap. Since the majority of remnant impressions will probably be sold run-of-site, this service presents a unique problem for marketers. The problem with run-of-site impression is that they seldom are delivered close enough geographically to an advertiser’s place of business to make an impact on sales in his or her store. Borrell Research says that one of the fastest growing types of digital advertising is targeted display. And there is a good reason for this trend. Targeted digital display ad impressions are delivered where you want them.

E-Marketer adds, “One crucial reason most people never click on banners is because the ads are rarely relevant to them.” Targeting is one way of making your ads more relevant. Beware of bidding on inventory based solely on price. When purchasing ad inventory think about your goals…a few additional pennies could mean better sales for your business.
